Wireless Network- Site Survey

Wireless Site Survey is the primary requirement in Wi-Fi Technology which make Wireless implementation better for Singling and bandwidth, so user can  connect with LAN network without wire over Mobile, Laptop with seamless Roaming without any wire connectivity and roaming issues. It is LAN technology which is used to connect Home, Campus, Building and Corporate network.

Wi-Fi Implementation Design Consideration

In Enterprise Network WiFi Network plays a very important role as every body is using Laptop and Mobile and wants to access their network from anywhere and anytime without any interruption and issues.

Wi-Fi is the part of LAN network only, so we need to always consider Wireless network during our Campus or office network design and implementation.

There are some major activities and considerations which we need to take care during Wi-Fi designing and implementation.

Documentation:

To execute any project proper and detailed document is very much required. This documents cab be project Plan, Technical or confrontational document, but these should be very detailed and contained each and every thing and finally should be agreed and signed off from Customer to avoid any future Gaps.

  • NIP- Network Implementation Plan
  • SS– Site Survey
  • HLD- High Level Document
  • Preparing BOQ
  • Active Site Survey
  • ATP/UAT– user Acceptance Test
  • LLD- Low Level Document

Network Implementation Plan (NIP) :

This document have project requirement, agreed SOW ( Scope of Work) for both customer and Supplier or MSI ( Master Service Integrator) to define the clear role and responsibilities and RACI (Responsible, Accountable, Consulted and Informed).

To prepare DPR  / NIP need to Understand the Customer Requirement

To design any Network, firstly we need to understand the customer requirement and based on we should design the network to full fill the client requirement.

Below the major checklist which we need to consider during requirement gathering:

  • Of user will going to use Wi-Fi ( recommended  to count max 25 user per AP)
  • Type of service ( Voice, Video, Data or All)
  • Count of Device per user ( example, Mobile + Laptop=2 device per user)
  • Any VIP location to provide dedicated Wi-Fi access ( Meeting Rooms, Vedio Conferencing Room or Higher management Cabin)
  • Indoor, Outdoor or Both
  • How many location to connect with WLC Centrally
  • Agreed on SOWs

Some of example of SOW like:

SCOPE OF WORK for Customer end
  • Identification of Suitable Place for positioning of Network Equipment and Access Points as per Survey.
  • Provision of adequate number of UPS supplied Power Points at all the locations wherever active components or access points need to be installed.
  • Proper Electrical Earthing with Neutral to Earth Voltage less than 2 volt, to ensure the safety of the network equipment and access points.
  • Temperature controlled (Air Conditioned) and Dust free environment at all locations where the switches and WI-Fi hardware need to be installed.
  • Provide the site details.
  • All Other information related to project requirement.
  • If required then provide Passive cabling and LAN port at Access Points Location
SCOPE OF WORK for MSI or Supplier end
  • Supply of the materials as per agreed BOQ.
  • Physical inspection and verification of the materials
  • Perform the power on test of the equipment and ensure that all the equipment are passing through the test without any failure.
  • Configuration and Testing of Equipment.
  • Wireless Site Survey for Indoor and Outdoor area.
  • Passive Cabling ( if it is under MSI SOW)
  • Provide the IP address Schema
  • Implement the equipment
  • Configure the devices and testing
  • Conduct ATP/ UAT and take final project sign off.

Site Survey report:

Once DPR or requirement gathering is completed then need to start conduct Wi-Fi Site Survey.

Site Visit for physical site Survey

Based on the requirement, need to visit at site to perform Wi- Fi Site Survey.

Performed Pre-Implementation Wi-Fi Site Survey ( by Survey tools or without tool)

Performing a Wireless Site Survey is very important and critical activity. Complete Wireless Network Design, Signal Strength and coverage are depend on the Survey report. This site survey should be conducted by expert only along the customer representative.

Wi-Fi Site survey can performed by multiple ways:

  • Passive Survey : Experts can roam all the floors, building and campus physically and get the survey done and provide BOQ. This good for small office or for 2-3 floor building and easy to perform survey in less time but not much Authenticated.
  • With Access Points: We can perform Survey with an Autonomous Access Points. It required min 2 access points to check coverage, signal strength and overlapping. But it required lots of time to pluck and un-pluck the access point, taking time to powered on and rebooting. Need Power to boot the access Points .

Also need manpower to carry, Mount, remove and handle the Access Points during Survey

  • Heat map generation: This is professional way to conduct Wi-Fi site Survey and most of the time client required this survey report for authenticity . But this survey can be bit costly as its required Survey Tools and licenses as well. This type is survey is required for very big organization, Campus, universities, large areas.

In this survey Client provide floor diag or floor plan in CAD and Expert upload that CAD on survey tools. Then start putting requirement like.. AP type, Antenna type, user per AP, walls, doors, interference, obstacle etc, then run the survey on tools.

This tool will generate Wi-Fi Heat Map with single Strength, overlapping, no. Of AP, coverage and other details. If you want to add and remove or reduce the AP count then we can perform physical survey and place the AP on the tools in CAD as per required location to check the results.

Wi-Fi Heat Map

Site Survey

There are multiple Heat Map generator tools Available in market.

Indoor and Outdoor Wi-Fi survey

Wi-Fi Survey can be for Indoor or outdoor and for both have different requirement of Survey and implementation.

We will discuss these both type of survey in little deeper here, because it is very important to understand to design Wireless Network.

Performed Active Site survey:

Once all access points mounted, registered with WLC and configure and after completion of WiFi implementation need to perform Active Wi-Fi survey. Active Wi-Fi means need to connect with Configured SSID and test real world to verify Wi-Fi Signal Strength Availability, Check Connectivity, getting IP via DHCP, SSID, Internet and Intranet accessibility, there should not be any overlapping issues, user connection issues.
